The material being mined and its products are nontoxic and aquatic life in the form of fish and at one time hippos is thriving in the existing process water storage and return system. Rehabilitation of the slimes dam is an ongoing process working from the bottom up. Silver acacia have been planted along the bottom of the dump, being leguminous, the trees supply nitrogen for grass to flourish under them which in turn holds the sandy material in place during the rains. Water from the tailings is recovered and pumped back for reuse in the plant. ISO 14001 certification for the operation was achieved in October 2003 and from then the Environmental Management System has been growing from strength to strength
