Acids

ZimPhos produces sulphuric acid from two plants, one plant uses local iron pyrites as a source of sulphur and the other uses imported elemental sulphur. The pyrites burning plant is maintenance intensive and was upgraded in 1988 to a capacity of 250 tonnes per day. About 85% of the acid produced is used for fertilizer production and the rest is used for aluminium sulphate production and sales, including exports mainly to the mining industry.

Phosphoric acid is produced from phosphate rock concentrate and sulphuric acid as an intermediate product in the production of triple superphosphates. The plant was re-vamped in 1997 doubling the capacity and modernizing the process controls and equipment.

Animal & Public Health

Chemplex Animal and Public Health (CAPH), a subsidiary of Chemplex Corporation, manufactures cattle dips such as the Deltatick and Tickbuster range which include spray-ons, pour-ons, and total immersion regimen; grain protectants such as Chikwapuro; malaria vector control such as the Deltaguard range of mosquito killers; household pesticides such as Guard Rat Killer, Migaphos Fly Killer, Snipe Cockroach Killer, and Guard Termite and Ant Killer; and the Germitoll range of detergents, disinfectants, hand cleaners, and dish washers.

Fertilizers

Phosphate contributes significantly (59%) to the NPK compound fertilizers formulation in Zimbabwe. Phosphate is a vital major nutritional component required by plants and as most soils in Zimbabwe are phosphate deficient, the phosphate industry is critical to agriculture.
Chemplex Corporation manufactures superphospates for fertiliser production, through the Zimbabwe Phosphates Industries (ZimPhos) company located in Msasa, Harare.
The factory produces single superphosphates (SSP) and triple superphosphates (TSP) from sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid and phosphate rock concentrate. These products are sold to ZFC and Windmill for production of NPK fertiliser compounds.
Under normal situations, ZimPhos is able to meet the country’s phosphate requirements.
Monocalcium phosphate (MCP) is also produced in the same plant from phosphoric acid and limestone and is used as a source of phosphates for stock feeds in the husbandry and poultry industries.

Water Treatment Chemicals

Chemplex Corporation manufactures Aluminium Sulphate, in liquid and solid form, for water treatment, through Zimbabwe Phosphates Industries (ZimPhos) company located in Msasa, Harare.

Aluminium Sulphate (Al3SO4) is used for portable water treatment by the City of Harare and other municipalities in the country. It is produced in liquid and solid form, from bauxite and sulphuric acid. The bauxite is imported form Mozambique.
